It’s one of the coolest places to stay on the Big Island. Since this is a historic hotel, there are no elevators. That means you’ll need to haul your luggage up a few stairs if you are on the ground level or a full flight of stairs if you are on the second floor.
Camping Areas Outside the Park

Walk or hike over 150 miles of park trails and through the lava tube and rainforests. While you’ll likely want to grab a reservation to avoid disappointment, it’s possible to walk or hike to the restaurant from your previous destination with ease.

The bar provides delicious snacks as well as an engaging view of the volcano’s caldera. Plenty of Dining OptionsOpen for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, you can relax and cool down at the Rim at any stage of your volcanoes adventure. And if you’re a guest of the hotel, room service from the restaurant is available throughout the day. Finally, if you are an active service member or have served in the US military you can also stay in the Kilauea Military Center (KMC, website). The KMC is located inside the park and offers 90 guest cottages and apartments with one, two, or three bedrooms, and a 110-bed dormitory. This is a section of the Crater Rim Drive near the Devastation Trail parking lot that is open to hikers only.

The ranger station on the Chain of Craters Road is open daily from 10 am to 9 pm.
Today, Volcano House is owned by the National Park Service. Unfortunately, a big fire burned the place down in 1940. However, George Lycurgus rebuilt the entire hotel and re-opened it in 1941. In 1895, George Lycurgus bought the Volcano House and updated it to be a 2 story Victorian-style hotel.

You can imagine what it was like to stay in a hotel dating back to 1846. While the volcano is not erupting like it was the past few years you can still see steam vents and enjoy the iconic location overlooking the Halemaumau Crater. Don't worry the average temperature is 67 to 73-degrees. They even have a lending library with natural history, cultural studies and children's bedtime books available to check out. I always wonder what early guests saw and enjoyed while visiting the park.
In 2022, the park closed the summit of Mauna Loa weeks ahead of its historic and nearly two-week eruption. As a result, no evacuations or search and rescue missions were necessary. You can even ask for a to-go cup to take with you out into the park. The Wi-Fi did not work for us during our stay but the hotel does say it is available. You may need to check in the lobby or other common areas if it does not reach your room.

Volcano House is the name of a series of historic hotels built at the edge of Kīlauea, within the grounds of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park on the Island of Hawai'i. The original 1877 building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and now houses the Volcano Art Center. The hotel in use today was built in 1941 and expanded in 1961. Trusdell said residents should look at his agency’s maps and learn how quickly lava may show up in their neighborhood. He also urged people living in one of the short-notice areas to pay attention if the summit turns red.

Park attractions include the following highlights, but please remember that there is far more in the park that deserves your attention (see e.g. this 1-day Hawaii Volcanoes National Park itinerary). It’s about 10 miles from the park, and it will take you about 20 minutes to get there. Hilo is about a 45-minute drive, and Kona is more than a 2-hour drive from the park. If you can’t get Hawaii Volcano National Park lodging, try this awesome hotel out.
The gate of the park stays open outside the official opening hours so don’t worry about staying late or arriving early (to avoid most other visitors). You can also choose to stay in the very nearby (a few minutes from the park entrance) Volcano village if camping in the park or staying in the Volcano House hotel doesn’t appeal to you. The village is located in the same lush rainforest as the park and hosts many charming and affordable vacation rental houses. The Mauna Loa Strip Road is an 11.2 mile (one way) road which takes you to the Mauna Loa lookout point at an elevation of 6,662 feet (2031 meters). During the drive up (and down again) you pass many impressive volcanic features and get to see some sweeping views of the Kaʻu district and the Kilauea volcano. Despite all of these impressive figures Kīlauea is the most famous of the Hawaiian volcanoes, and rightly so!
Plus, it’s right across the street from the visitor’s center, and there are food options on the main level. It’s the best place to stay at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The Hawaii Volcano House is the ONLY hotel near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Most of the other accommodations are camping or vacation rental homes. If you’d like a chain hotel, you’d need to look at Hilo Big Island hotels. Beside the Hawaii Volcano Hotel, you’ll find some Volcanoes National Park cabins as well, but that’s about it.
The Mauna Loa Road Scenic drive
You will need to check with the center before hiking within the park and to check on things to do, there is a daily schedule of ranger-led activities that you can join. Comfortable rooms, some with breathtaking views offer the experience of being part of history settings in a truly unique setting. Volcano House has received the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence for the year 2014 for consistently receiving excellent traveler reviews. Historic Volcano House, on the rim of the crater, is the only lodging available inside the park.

Fees All guests must pay the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park entrance fee which is $30 per each non-commercial vehicle, $25 per motorcycle or $15 per individual travelling on foot or bicycle. If you would like to rent a tent, you may do so for an additional $40 per night, per tent (up to 2 tents). (BIVN) – Temporary closures are in effect within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, as officials are keeping a close eye on a recent spike in earthquakes under Kīlauea volcano. County and State campgrounds are located around the island.

If you are a light sleeper make sure to bring earplugs with you. All the more reason why Magno said officials are spreading the word about the science of the volcano and urging people to be prepared.

Most are decommissioned, retired submarines, saved from being scrapped after being deemed as unfit for further military service to the Navy. Many of them saw action during World War II or played a role in the Cold War and/or Vietnam. Some were used for training, experimenting, or research for the development of today's submarine force.

Nineteen are still in the water while six (Albacore, Batfish, Cavalla, Drum, Marlin, and U-505) are secured on dry land. It is truely an amazing experience to tour any submarine museum! Also, there is more to the submarine museums than just submarines. Many have exhibits of torpedoes, mines, and ships (targets) to see while you're there.
