It’s one of the coolest places to stay on the Big Island. Since this is a historic hotel, there are no elevators. That means you’ll need to haul your luggage up a few stairs if you are on the ground level or a full flight of stairs if you are on the second floor.
Camping Areas Outside the Park
Wake up to the sunrise and the sound of rare Hawaiian songbirds. These two viewpoints are the main selling point of this small hike, as this is without doubt the best place the see the dramatically enlarged Halemaʻumaʻu crater. One very good way to explore the chain of craters road is with the help of a GPS assisted audio guide.

However, the gradual strengthening of seismic swarms suggests that an eruption in the summit region of Kīlauea or beneath the upper East Rift Zone in the park is one potential outcome. The Big Island resorts and hotels are on the west shore.Kailua Kona and Waikoloa are quite far from the eruption and visitors will not be effected by the constantly changing volcanic action. Walk or hike over 150 miles of park trails and through the lava tube and rainforests. Convenient LocationLocated within the grounds of the park itself, it’s certainly a popular resting place for wary travelers coming to or from a day of exploration and excitement. While you’ll likely want to grab a reservation to avoid disappointment, it’s possible to walk or hike to the restaurant from your previous destination with ease.

The bar provides delicious snacks as well as an engaging view of the volcano’s caldera. The restored Volcano House offers 33 historic guest rooms, a dining room, snack bar, lounge, and gift shop, along with cultural events and demonstrations. Volcano House also manages 10 newly refurbished camper cabins and campsites in the nearby Nāmakanipaio Campground. The chain of craters road is one of our favorite scenic drives of the Big Island. The ranger station on the Chain of Craters Road is open daily from 10 am to 9 pm.
Today, Volcano House is owned by the National Park Service. Unfortunately, a big fire burned the place down in 1940. However, George Lycurgus rebuilt the entire hotel and re-opened it in 1941. In 1895, George Lycurgus bought the Volcano House and updated it to be a 2 story Victorian-style hotel.

You can imagine what it was like to stay in a hotel dating back to 1846. While the volcano is not erupting like it was the past few years you can still see steam vents and enjoy the iconic location overlooking the Halemaumau Crater. Savor dishes made with a selection of freshly caught fish, grass-fed beef, vegetables, and more.

At sunset, the deep blue skies break dramatically in two, with a fiery red-orange glow carving vertically into the night, resulting in one of the most-photogenic natural phenomenons you’ll ever see. O‘ahu is the lively center and most visited of all Hawaiian Islands. As a paradise for active travelers it is rich in experiences that include nature, culinary discoveries, historic landmarks, shopping, nightlife and festivals. Below you can find the map of the (most popular) summit area of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Don't worry the average temperature is 67 to 73-degrees. They even have a lending library with natural history, cultural studies and children's bedtime books available to check out. I always wonder what early guests saw and enjoyed while visiting the park.
In 2022, the park closed the summit of Mauna Loa weeks ahead of its historic and nearly two-week eruption. As a result, no evacuations or search and rescue missions were necessary. One of the biggest attractions throughout the entire state of Hawaii remains the expansive, geographically diverse Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
You can even ask for a to-go cup to take with you out into the park. The Wi-Fi did not work for us during our stay but the hotel does say it is available. You may need to check in the lobby or other common areas if it does not reach your room.
